Open Space

OPEN SPACE IS A CHICO WAY OF LIFE

Roughly half of the entire Valley’s Edge area is dedicated to recreation and open space. This provides protection of Oak Woodlands, preserves sensitive habitat, safeguards natural drainages for healthy soil and flood control, allows wildlife to roam as intended, and sets a permanent buffer against further urban growth.

PROTECTS NATURAL RESOURCES

This dedicated open space protects Chico’s cultural heritage including the pioneer era rock walls, the old Doe Mill Wagon Road, and other areas of cultural sensitivity. The open space land use designation protects Oak Woodlands, preserves sensitive habitat, safeguards natural drainages, facilitates wildlife movement, and establishes a permanent urban growth buffer for the wildland urban interface (WUI).

ENHANCES QUALITY OF LIFE

Open space removes distractions of the outside world and allows us to create more focused connections with ourselves and others. Opportunities to exercise and socialize enhance quality of life for all. For the kids? Parks are where friends and lifelong memories are made.
